What is the Radiological Protection Ordinance (StSV)?
The StSV (SR 814.501) is the Swiss federal ordinance governing the use of ionising radiation. It regulates licences, protective measures, dose limits and the initial and continuing education of everyone who works with radiation professionally. Details on professions, teaching units and certificates of participation are set out in the Radiological Protection Training Ordinance (StAV, SR 814.501.261). Read more in the guide “What are the StSV and StAV?”. Source: StSV on Fedlex.
Who needs continuing education in radiation protection?
Everyone who works with ionising radiation, directs its use or is exposed to it at work: radiographers, doctors using X-rays or fluoroscopy, medical practice assistants, operating theatre professionals, dentists, dental staff, chiropractors and nuclear medicine staff. The licence holder, meaning the practice, clinic or institute, is responsible for ensuring that staff receive continuing education (Art. 173 StSV). To find your group, use the profession selector. Source: FOPH, Continuing Education in Radiation Protection.
How often do I need continuing education?
At least every five years (Art. 175 StSV). You may spread the required amount over several courses, provided they all fall within the relevant five-year period. Many people take one course with 2 UE each year and avoid last-minute pressure. With the UE packages you can book your entire requirement at once and still learn in stages.
Where can I find my expiry date?
The date of your last continuing education course appears on your certificate of participation. Whether your deadline runs from that date or your organisation uses shared five-year periods is defined in its initial and continuing education plan; your organisation’s radiation protection experts can advise you. In your WiseRay account you can see all completed courses with dates and UE. Start about six months before the deadline to leave enough time for several short courses.
Which authority is responsible for me?
In the medical sector, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) is the licensing and supervisory authority; it inspects X-ray and nuclear medicine facilities and checks staff continuing education. The cantons issue professional practice and operating licences and may also request evidence. Suva is responsible for industry and trade, and ENSI for nuclear installations. Keep certificates of participation available for each person and each organisation. Source: FOPH, Radiation Protection.
Do I need fewer teaching units if I work part-time?
No. The required amount depends on your activity and role, not your working hours. Someone working with a C-arm at 40 percent needs the same UE as a full-time colleague. Source: FOPH, frequently asked questions.
Does my continuing education need official recognition?
Not for most professions: the continuing education must match your activity, meet the required amount and be documented. Recognition is required only for certain expert roles with increased potential risk. Check your role in the profession selector; it identifies activities requiring recognised training. Source: FOPH, frequently asked questions.
What happens if my continuing education has expired?
An activity for which current evidence of continuing education is missing may only be resumed once the training has been completed. Breaches of radiation protection law may result in fines: currently up to CHF 10’000, or up to CHF 20’000 in certain cases (Art. 44 StSG, Art. 199 StSV); the revised Radiological Protection Act, adopted by Parliament on 19 June 2026 and not yet in force, provides for up to CHF 40’000 for intentional breaches and CHF 20’000 for negligence. The amount in an individual case depends on the specific offence; inspection findings may also follow. Catching up is straightforward: Create account, choose courses for your profession, 8 UE for CHF 129. Read more in the guide “Continuing education expired: deadlines, consequences and how to catch up”.
Requirements and courses
What is a teaching unit (UE)?
One UE comprises at least 45 minutes of continuing education. Most WiseRay Academy courses have 2 UE (90 minutes), while four courses have 1 UE. The amount is shown on every course page and certificate of participation. Source: StAV on Fedlex.
How many UE do I need over five years?
Examples according to the FOPH: radiographers need 8 UE in radiology and 16 UE in nuclear medicine, medical practice assistants 8 UE, doctors using fluoroscopy 8 UE, operating theatre professionals 8 UE, dentistry and chiropractic 4 UE, dental hygiene 4 or 6 UE, and dental assisting 2, 4 or 6 UE depending on the activity. The profession selector shows your requirement and its source. Source: FOPH, Continuing Education in Radiation Protection.
Who are WiseRay courses for?
For professionals in radiology, CT, operating theatres and interventions, nuclear medicine, practices using X-rays and dentistry, as well as radiation protection experts and managers organising their teams’ continuing education. 32 courses cover fundamentals, patient protection, staff, equipment and organisation. Choose by profession, work area or topic. All courses.
Can I complete my continuing education online?
Yes. The FOPH explicitly lists e-learning as a permitted form of continuing education; what matters is relevant content, the required number of UE and verification of participation. The Academy offers clinical content, UE stated for each course and electronic participation tracking with a certificate of participation. Where practical exercises on equipment are useful, in-person or in-house training can supplement the online courses; see Comparison. Source: FOPH, Continuing Education in Radiation Protection.
Can I combine several courses?
Yes. The required UE may come from several training events, including those from different providers, provided the content matches your activity and all fall within the five-year period. At WiseRay you put together your own courses; from 4 UE, the following applies automatically: package pricing. Source: FOPH, frequently asked questions.
Do I need to pass an examination at WiseRay?
No. You work through tasks from everyday clinical practice and receive feedback with an explanation for each answer. There is no minimum score; you receive your certificate of participation after completing the entire course. This lets you learn without exam pressure and repeat tasks at any time.
How long does a course take, and which devices can I use?
A course with 2 UE takes around 90 minutes; you can pause and continue later, and your progress is saved. Courses run in the browser on a computer, tablet or smartphone, with no app required. Your access is unlimited in time, and you set the pace.
Prices and payment
How much does a course cost?
One teaching unit costs CHF 19. A course with 2 UE therefore costs CHF 38, and a course with 1 UE costs CHF 19. Package pricing applies from 4 UE: 4 UE CHF 69, 8 UE CHF 129, 16 UE CHF 239. There is no base fee and no subscription. All prices.
How does package pricing work?
You can add any courses to your cart. When the total reaches 4, 8 or 16 UE, the cart automatically applies the package price: CHF 69, 129 or 239. No code or advance selection is required. 6 UE cost CHF 107 (the 4 UE package plus 2 UE at CHF 19). This means you pay for 8 UE at CHF 129 instead of CHF 152.
Is there a package covering all courses?
No. You only pay for the UE you need. If you want more, you can combine several packages; access to purchased courses remains unlimited in time. For organisations with 10 or more learners, we prepare an offer.
Why is online learning less expensive than an in-person course?
An online course requires no classroom, travel or full day away from work. A typical in-person course with 8 UE costs around CHF 800 in course fees, plus travel, meals and a full working day; online, 8 UE cost CHF 129, and you can schedule the six hours of learning yourself. The calculation and all assumptions are shown on the pricing page. Where practical exercises on equipment are necessary, we offer in-person and in-house training.
Are there any hidden costs?
No. The price includes the course with all its tasks, the certificate of participation, the UE overview in your account and unlimited access. There is no registration fee, renewal fee or charge for repeating courses.
How do I pay?
Online in the shopping cart using the payment methods displayed there; you will receive your order confirmation by email. Institutions with 10 or more learners receive an offer with invoicing to the organisation. Request an offer.
Account and certificate
Where do I register?
Under My account you can create an account with your email address in a few steps or sign in. There you will find your courses, UE overview and certificates of participation.
Where can I find my purchased courses?
In My account under your courses. You can start, pause and resume each course there; your progress is saved.
Can I see the UE I have completed?
Yes. Your UE overview in your account shows all completed courses with dates and UE, as well as the total. You can always see how much remains towards your five-year requirement.
What information appears on the certificate of participation?
Surname, first name, date of birth, title and date of the training event, content, number of teaching units and the continuing education institution: all information required by Art. 3 para. 4 StAV. You receive the certificate in your account after completing the course; it serves as documentation of continuing education for you and your organisation. A sample is shown on the course page. Source: StAV on Fedlex.
I have lost a certificate. What should I do?
Nothing is lost: all certificates of participation remain available in your account for retrieval. Download them again there or forward them to your radiation protection expert.
Teams and data protection
Are there offers for clinics and practices?
Yes. For 10 or more learners, we prepare an offer: courses by department and profession, invoicing to the organisation and, on request, an overview for management showing each person’s progress. In-person and in-house training supplement online courses, for example for practical exercises on equipment. Request an offer.
My team includes several professions. Is that possible?
Yes. Each person chooses courses for their activity: radiographers, operating theatre staff, doctors and nuclear medicine staff in one order. Each person receives their own certificate of participation; management can view everyone’s progress on request.
Can the organisation pay for its employees?
Yes. For 10 or more learners, this is arranged through an offer with invoicing to the organisation. For smaller teams, each person orders through their own account and submits the order confirmation internally. For questions, please contact us via the Contact.
How does WiseRay handle my data?
Sparingly: we store what is needed for your account, courses and certificates of participation. With institutional access, authorised contacts at your organisation can see course assignments, completion dates and confirmed teaching units. Your certificate of participation is available in your account; you decide whom else to show the document to.
